Financial Support available for care leavers through Social Work

The local authority have a duty to provide aftercare support to eligible care leavers and this can include financial support.

Financial support is provided through social work services based on individual circumstances and assessed need. This can be a one of payment or ongoing support over a period of time.

Financial support can be provided to meet a range of needs including:

Core living allowance (equivalent of Universal Credit) for 16 and 17 year old care leavers who cannot claim Universal Credit or an enhanced allowance in certain circumstances.

  • Financial Support to meet accommodation costs in certain circumstances.
  • Financial Support to help you when you buy the items you need when you first move in to your new home.
  • Financial support to meet individual needs and purchase specific items you require to support you transition into independence.
  • Emergency financial support to meet basic needs when other sources of funds not available.

If you have a worker in social work services, you can discuss the financial support you need with your worker. If you do not have a worker in social work, you can contact your local team by email at IntensiveServicesGeneralAdmin@northlan.gov.uk
